sketches of (one of) my blades mc eva (+ tyril LOL) for @choicesoctober :D i have blades mcs for each of the LIs so here is my tyrilmancer mc which i also currently use for blades 2. some basics:
human, he/she, bisexual, gender is ?????? but mostly fem-presenting
best friends with mal
most proficient with the bow
ends up living in undermount with tyril/where ever tyril goes. their interracial relationship causes a stir amongst the elves
tends to use light magic a lot
dies of old age and traumatizes tyril forever LOL
i also came up with lore for an AU where eva isn't MC and meets tyril and the others in a different way. details under the cut ↓
eva is born to a poor family in whitetower. he lives in the nooks and crannies where she becomes fast friends with mal and his sister.
he's taken in by the temple of light at age 8 after they find his magical affinity. he lives at the temple for a while before escaping it at age 20. her escape causes an issue for the temple because of her practice of magic outside of temple conventions.
she leaves whitetower and stays in port parnassus.
when eva hears of nia's reformation of the temple he goes back to whitetower to see the change. he's skeptical but hopefully optimistic for the change nia is doing. there he meets mal again and decides to help around his and nia's orphanage.
that's also where eva meets tyril. it takes a few years but they finally get together, but the relationship is on-and-off. they don't end up together for good.
tyril is the elven equivalent of 25; eva is 30 (in this AU).
skills: brawling / deception / medicine / light

Blades LI Alignments
It struck me today that the TTRPG pages don't list alignments. Why? Because a lot of players and DMs/GMs see them as outdated and unnecessarily limiting?
...I'm gonna do it anyway.
Here's are the alignments, via the newest addition of Dungeons and Dragons (5e). Basically, how much you follow rules? And how much do you help people/how selfish are you?
Tumblr media
Tyril- Lawful Good
Tyril is, to me, extremely Lawful Good most of the time. He's on a (according to him and society) righteous quest to stop evil with no room for nuance. Remember that time he decapitated a corrupted mayor in the middle of the street? He nudges a bit less lawful right at the end, but that's a big moment for him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nia- Neutral Good
Nia was raised in the strict rules of the Temple of Light, but she abandons those pretty quickly. She's not seeking out heists, but she kind of likes them. And Nia is undoubtably motivated to protect literally everyone. Textbook Neutral Good!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mal- Chaotic Neutral to Chaotic Good
Mal has never once cared what the law told him to do and he's not about to start! Our boy is Chaotic, as rouges tend to be. Mal starts pretty focused on his own survival and nothing else (Neutral), but pretty openly acknowledges that MC made him focus on helping others (Good). Stealing from the rich to finance an orphanage you run where you refer to all of the kids as 'yours' is the most Chaotic Good thing to ever happen.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Imtura- Chaotic Neutral
Imtura is a pirate. And she doesn't seem to have any regard for even Flotilla law. Classic Chaotic. And she does lots of good things, but she seems more motivated by protecting the people shares cares about, rather than any more abstract sense of Right. I call that Chaotic Neutral.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Valax- Lawful Neutral
Valax doesn't even have a TTRPG page, but she should! She does things that are both traditionally Evil (kidnapping, blood draining) and Good (owl bear protecting, not killing her friend). But Valax does almost all of them due to a code of conduct- initially set by the Ash Empress, but eventually set by Valax herself. To Valax, it's not about right or wrong. To me, that's Lawful Neutral.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Aerin- Book 1 Neutral Evil, Book 2 True Neutral?
Aerin is a case where the cracks in alignment kind of show. To me, he's best embodied by this gif:
Tumblr media
I went by process of elimination for him. And didn't give much weight to what Aerin says when he's fully corrupted, because that's a whole different thing.
Lawful/Chaotic: Aerin knows how to play along with what's expected of him, but clearly doesn't have much loyalty to the letter of the law. And at no point is he spontaneous. So he's in the middle Neutral column in both books.
Good/Evil: Aerin thought he was doing the right thing in Book 1. And he seemed to genuinely like the party and want to look out for them. But I think we can agree that bringing everyone together with the intention of summoning the Dreadlord and kidnapping Nia are both Evil.
Book 2, Aerin helps save the world, but only if you're not a dick to him. To me, that puts him more in the Neutral category. I feel like a fully Good character would still by out there trying to save the world no matter what.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Any agreements or disagreements? I'd love to hear about them!

Just absolutely heartbroken thinking about how Mal and Imtura must have missed each other after they had their fallout
Imtura and Mal always got each other and were easily the fastest, easiest bond to form between any of the LIs with each other. Not that the other possible combinations aren't all great in their own way (that's one of the strengths of Blades imo), but Mal and Imtura think similarly, have similar values, similar personalities, and, from what I can remember, never even had a single disagreement the whole time they were traveling together. Their dynamic was easy, tripping each other up on the streets of Undermount, they brought a lightness to each other and the group that no one else could. They both understood what it's like to be an outcast - Imtura for being an orc, Mal for being extremely poor. They even had a similar kind of complicated relationship with their past/family, where they both ran as far as possible from them and couldn't push it fully away
My point is, they understood each other possibly the best out of any other dynamic in that group. And it showed, from the way they always had similar opinions and worldviews to the way they joked around easily nearly from day 1. And because a good part of that bonding was exactly because they were both outcasts in nearly all the places they went to together, losing that meant that, once again, they were left to be the odd one out, the one no one really understands. Especially without MC, who, depending on your choices, also had a similar dynamic with them both
For Imtura especially I just cannot imagine how hard it must have been. She was convinced someone she loved deeply (whether romantically or not) was dead. She watched them get snagged right in front of her as she was helpless - the single thing she hates being more than anything - to do anything, and then she was convinced they had died, and she was heartbroken. And then all her other friends, the ones who were supposed to get how she was feeling because they went through the exact same thing, turned their backs to her
And I can't be sure, but I strongly suspect that Imtura knew or at least thought that Mal agreed that MC was dead. I mean, let's be real, nothing else makes sense for his character. Mal has never been an optimist a day in his life. They met Threep and his instant reaction was "clearly this thing is gonna grow to be huge and eat our faces off". He has that whole devil-may-care attitude about being in dangerous situations, yes, which we know is a facade (he himself said he's always a little afraid), but when it comes to predicting the outcomes of things? Mal always expects the worst. And MC had been missing without any leads for a year. In the Shadow Realm, which no one had ever come out of alive before Kade. At that point, thinking MC was dead was more logical than thinking they were alive
And if Imtura knew all of that, which I think she did even if subconsciously... It must have hurt even more that Mal still sided with Tyril and Nia, which he has never done before, mind you, and cut his ties with her. I mean, I'm sure it was two-way, but still. Just like that, she lost all her friends when she was already going through an extremely rough grief process. And the one she was the closest to took the others' side even though he agreed with her. She didn't even have her crew anymore because she couldn't go to the sea again without MC. She had no one and nowhere to turn to at all, in a city full of humans that she barely knew on top of that
Meanwhile Mal also lost his greatest ally on top of going through the exact same grief process, except he had to hide it and keep going. He was burning the candle at both ends trying to keep himself busy and continuing a search that he didn't even believe in, while hiding his true feelings/opinion from Nia and Tyril, who, on top of that, had always had a tendency to side with each other against Mal because they came from similarly sheltered and rigid backgrounds. I'm not saying they were ganging up on him or putting him aside on purpose, and it's clear he grew even closer to the both of them, but when it came to deciding what to do or discussing the ethics or something, Nia and Tyril had always been on the same side. And even on a more day-to-day basis, there are many things Nia and Tyril just can't understand because they were so sheltered. I'm aware Imtura is a princess, but she's been living as a pirate for a long time now, so she's lived in a world way closer to Mal's than theirs - starting with also being on the "wrong" side of the law. Also, she's an orc. No place but Flotilla is ever truly welcoming to her, and Flotilla doesn't feel like her home either for different reasons
And the signs of how much they missed each other was there. I don't see any reason whatsoever for Imtura to stay in Whitetower - a city I think she complained about more than Undermount - other than the fact that she knew Mal and Nia were there. Maybe she couldn't go to Flotilla or the sea, but there were still plenty of better places for her than Whitetower. And Mal had been keeping tabs on her. And not the casual kind of keeping tabs either, because he knew exactly where she would be the same second MC asked. And they don't have GPS tracking and Mal is the only one out of the remaining trio who doesn't have magic. Mal had to make a huge effort to be able to keep tabs on her like that. And he was the only one who did, despite the fact that Nia and Tyril could have done so way more easily. I have no doubt in my mind that he kept watching her so closely because he missed her. And she still wanted to be close to them, even if only in the vaguest possible terms, despite the fact that Whitetower is an actively hostile place to orcs
And I just. IDK. They were both actively grieving/mourning MC and doing so alone (although in different contexts) and in spaces where they were the odd one out and Imtura in particular was turning to the most unhealthy coping mechanisms known to man. And they could have easily supported each other. And from what we've seen, they wanted to. And they didn't. Because one of the things they are similar in is the way they avoid letting themselves be vulnerable and forgive like that. And it makes me so sad

450 Followers: Meet The Writer
Hello there! We’re back with another Meet The Writer Q&A and it’s our pleasure to introduce a fellow Brazilian fanfic author for our ninth interview:
Tumblr media
Blog: @julia-highstorms Name (or petname): Julia/Ju Birthday: July 9 Nationality: Brazilian 🇧🇷 Current residency: I'm one of the 12 million people living in São Paulo, Brazil Languages you speak: Brazilian Portuguese, English and a bit of Japanese Masterlist: Julia’s choices fanfiction masterlist
1. Is there a meaning behind your url name? Yes! For those who have been following me for a while, they already know that I used to change my URL according to the Choices character I was stanning at the time but it was a PAIN to fix all my fanfics links 😩 so I decided to finally create an unique URL that I wouldn't get tired of. So I mixed my two surnames together and it (basically) means Highstorms. I loved it 😌
2. When did you start playing Choices? What's the first book you played? 2017 I believe. TRR book 1 was about to debut. YEAH. It was the Freshman Book 1.
3. When did you decide to join Choices fandom? December 21 2017. ILITW was in its last chapters and I was obsessed with it. I wanted to talk about it with other people, but I didn't know anyone who also played Choices. So I found the fandom on Tumblr and decided to join. I miss all my friends I made back then and we all went nuts with ILITW finale together 😩 Good times
4. Go back to your archive and tell us what was your first post on your Choices blog was about. My first post was about how I loved ILITW and how everyone was fucked up sjddndossok also a lot of reblogs about MAKE NOAH AN LI 🗣️
5. How long have you been writing fanfiction? I started writing fanfictions in my senior year of high school, although I attempted to write my own stories when I was younger, around 12-13.
6. Share the first fanfic you wrote with us. Do you still like it or would you change anything about it? My first fanfic ever is about The Maine, it was my favorite band back then slfjdfodj but my first Choices fanfic is If Jane Was Here (ILITW told by Noah) Chapter 1. I AM SO PROUD OF IT. Of course, there are some things I would change. Like adding even more angst. Having finished writing it way sooner. But I'm super proud of it overall. My first (and so far only) Choices long series I've ever finished. Wow.
7. What are your favorite Choices books to write about? Definitely Open Heart just because of Bryce Lahela and Rei (my MC). OPH has become a mess, but I love Bryce too much. I loved the It Lives anthology too and enjoyed writing about. And I'm hyped for my upcoming Blades AU series!
8. What is your specialty as a fanfic writer? Oooh I guess it is rewriting certain scenes or events of the books or thinking about AUs. Since ILITW I have enjoyed doing this. Writing on another character's point of view of the events that have happened (the whole If Jane Was Here series, that is ILITW told by Noah's POV). Or adding some depth to a certain scene (did something like this with Julia, my ILB MC, and Tom's relationship. And with Rei and Bryce's). Or even rewriting the story to fit better with my MC's personality (Rei, OPH MC).
9. What aspect of your writing do you most enjoy to see praised? When people say they like my MC's, Rei (OPH MC) and Luxia (Blades MC). Before, whenever I played Choices, I didn't care much about the MCs because they're all generic (which makes sense because we're the ones playing it). They're always the happy go lucky friend that tries to fix everyone's problems and every LI is in love with them. Boooooring. Rei was my first MC that I created a whole non-canon personality to her, and that's why she's my baby 🥺 and when people commented that they felt represented by Rei, that she felt more realistic than PB's usual MC, well, that was my peak as a writer lol so they're basically OC's, with their own personalities and temperaments.
10. Do you participate in any writing events or challenges throughout the year? If so, what do you like about them? I do, but I wish I could participate more often! The prompts are what I like the most, because they give me ideas that I'd have never thought to write about before.
11. Are there any writers (published authors and/or fanfic writers) who influenced your writing? Meg Cabot was my favorite author growing up and I read some of Sophie Kinsella’s books too, so probably my love for adding a bit of comedy, silly little things in my fanfics came from them. I love Jane Austen too. And last but not least, my flair for angst definitely came from reading Fruits Basket, my favorite manga ever. There’s so much angst in Furuba dodksdishd Takaya Natsuki-sensei really enjoys it. I recommend reading her other manga series, Twinkle Stars, too.
12. What element of writing do you struggle with most? Actually writing lmao. You know, taking the plot out of my mind and typing it down on Google Docs. Writing is hard, takes too much time and I'm lazy 😩 I wish I could just transfer my ideas to a document and it's done. No need to write, no need to revise, etc. I love the final product, but I hate the process.
13. Do you have any abandoned WIPs? What made you abandon them? A BUNCH OAJDSKDKD 🤦 Either because my inspiration to write it has faded or because I don't want to spend my whole time writing.
14. You’re applying for the fanfic writer of the year award. What five fanfics do you put in your portfolio? Oooooh great question! I must put:
If Jane Was Here - Alternative ending (ILITW): this is the only finale I accept sorrynotsorry
Too Little Too Late - Jax x MC (Bloodbound): I wanted to feel hurt. People cried. I loved it sclkdsdjsops
The Loudest One - Bryce x F!MC (Open Heart): I wrote this one for CFWC Kinktober! And honestly, this is the best smut scene I have written. I’m quite proud about it.
Satisfied - Jax x Lily (Bloodbound): it was fun writing for my crack ship! My babies. And the first smut scene I have ever written. I’m glad it was with these two. I still can’t get over the fact that either one of them dies in BB’s finale. I cannot accept skfjdpd
Lullaby - Tyril x Elf!F!MC (Blades): don’t get me wrong, I love Tyril and his goth lordling mysterious elf boy personality and the first time he and MC made out was HOT but… I missed a bit of clousure before, you know? It felt a bit sudden to me, so I wrote a couple of fanfics showing their growing interest and attraction towards one another. This one is a light cute one and I really like it.
15. Do you create original content aside from fanfiction (original stories, art, etc)?  I sometimes draw some fanarts in which you can see by searching for #occasional drawings on my Tumblr.
Do you want to contribute with questions/ideas for the next Meet The Writer Q&A? Send us a message.
Thanks for reading! Reblog to share your appreciation for @julia-highstorms ❤️

how blades mc goes dark:
starts with mc learning that they might be able to stop the shadow court, but not kill them, like the elves before them. wouldnt it be best mc thinks, if they just controlled the darkness. could they kill the shadow court if they had the same sort of dark power? if they were in control, could they end the dreadlord? no one would ever be hurt again. . .
mc thinks of kade. everyone else is trying to go somewhere, tyril is trying to avenge his friend. imtura wants to prove herself, but all mc wants is their brother back. the adventure is more than they ever dreamed off, more than they thought theyd ever see of the world, but this is about kade. nothing really matters until their brother is safe again, the only person they have in the world.
they face more shadow court members. mc cares about the party and its clear everytime, how much stronger the darkness is than the light. they just want to be strong enough to protect their friends this time around
then they all get to white tower. and just when mc thinks things are going to work out, the priest of light wants to sacrifice a bunch of people. light, dark, its all the same people get hurt. mc thinks how can you cleanse something with a dark act. maybe the answer here is darkness. mc. . .they dont want to risk the shards until kade is rescued and maybe thats selfish but its their brother
aerin stabs the blade of darkness through Baldur. mc is more shocked than anything. as far as deaths go, baldur wasnt such a loss. but-it was aerin all along. he was serving the dreadlord. no one even suspected it. again, darkness proves to be more powerful than the light.
mc screams, trying to save nia. but no light, no magic, nothing is enough. if only mc had darkness to fight back with.
the party goes to save nia.
its too late. kade is dead. theres something black and terrible, a pressure crushing mc's chest like the abyssal zone of the ocean where no light reaches. its never enough. not the sword, not the magic. bitterness floods mcs mouth. mc clenches their fists, and the shadows react.
mc confronts aerin.
"why would you want to be just a king," mc asks aerin, "when you could be the king."
"i serve the dreadlord."
"so youre still nothing," mc knows where to turn the knife. "but you dont have to be."
its crazy. hes shown his true colors. mc shouldnt trust him at all now. but they do. its not trust in the usual sense, but trust born from understanding. mc understands aerin, remembers how hed blushed, sees how he hesitates know when he could so easily kill mc with the sword. he has all the cards but hes listening. mc can work with this.
"you could be the dark king of all the realms," mc emphasises, "and i could be yours."
"how. . .how could i trust you," aerin points out, but the blade is lax in his hand. mc could corrupt just as much as the dreadlord.
the best lies hold truth in them. mc doesnt mean to step aside, but right now they need aerin on their side if theyre going to take on the dreadlord and save nia (can she even be saved?) "do you remember that night in the forest glade? our kiss? that was real aerin. its still real."
"youd still have me, even as i am?"
mc understands, wanting to fit in, wanting people who love you. its a crushing loneliness to have no one. mc gets it, they were an orphan with only kade in the world. the shadows become sharper as mc thinks of kade, dead. they failed their brother.
mc focuses on aerin. they might fall apart if they linger on kade. "ive never found you more attractive." its not even a lie. none of what they shared was necessary for this farce. aerin sought mc out. now mc sees him as he is: dark lines over alabaster skin, the shadows cluster around him like an unholy crown.
aerin gives her the sword. they face the dreadlord together. the same thrill that came with slaying dutchess xenia rushes through mc.
"youre all weak and pathetic," the dreadlord spits.
"nia, i know your still in there." mc still wants to save her friend. nia who's held her hand and taught her how to summon orbs of light.
"please," nia breaks through, "you have to-"
an understanding passes through them both. theres no judgement in her eyes as mc wields the blade of darkness, and plunges into nia.
(because its the blade of darkness, nia dies.)
the metallic taste of blood fills mc's mouth. always blood. always death. never again. their hand tightens on the blade. mc would never be helpless to save her friends again.
tyril flinches when he looks at mc. imtura's gaze doesnt track, still looking at nia's dead body. its mal who breaches the subject, "oh kit, what have you done."
"what i had to." mc sheaths the sword. their hand is pale, a bruise blue undercast.
mc looks at aerin, and refuses to look back. they had a kingdom to finish taking over.

for the fandom ask: playchoices, for old times' sake? (or just blades if that's too vast)
lol, i’m going to to all of playchoices for the spice™
The first character I first fell in love with: i think one of the first li’s i ever truly loved unconditionally was prince hamid. i can’t remember 100% if i read desire and decorum or the elementalists first, but i’m pretty sure it was desire and decorum, and prince hamid came for my heart. imagine being that good looking, that sweet, that funny, and just overall amazing? i for one, cannot. prince hamid was like.... you’re not quite sure if you love sir luke, huh? well bet because i’m stealing your heart. wow. what a man.
The character I never expected to love as much as I do now: this goes out to my beloved diego soto-ortiz because i originally read endless summer and was amazed, but then i replayed it with diamonds and !!!!!! wow. that’s probably one of the few books where diamonds are a must. anyway, while reading it i grew extra attached to diego for no reason other than the fact that he’s amazing.
The character everyone else loves that I don’t: for a moment i was going to put jake mckenzie from endless summer but he’s alright. i’m actually putting dr. ethan ramsey because i PLAYED open heart for a diamond mine and my GOD, i couldn’t escape him. they really tried to make him the main li but i was in love with rafael? and dr. ethan ramsey was just there. making ‘rookie’ jokes that only nik ryder can get away with, and confusing my mc’s thoughts.
The character I love that everyone else hates: i actually stick with the popular opinion a lot, lol, but i love literally everyone from endless summer and yes, unfortunately that includes aleister rourke. he’s bland and surly but at least they didn’t make him an li and shove him down our throats (dr. ramsey, i’m looking at you).
The character I used to love but don’t any longer: uhhh... i want to say damien nazario? i used to like him a decent amount, but i haven’t played perfect match in a long time, and i keep seeing memes about him and his ~damien-ness~ so i have to say i’m not longer super charmed. maybe a replay would fix that.
The character I would totally smooch: griffin langley? andy kang? mal volari?
The character I’d want to be like: lol, i so badly want to be the mc from blades and the mc from endless summer. they were truly a gift to humanity. the mc from desire and decorum was amazing, too. imagine pumping out these mcs and then making witness and the nanny affair.....
The character I’d slap: i never finished my two first loves but mason (the best friend) deserves a good slap for some of his earlier behavior. i’d also love to slap tyril for no other reason than i want to see the look on his face.
A pairing that I love: the mc from high school story: class act and ajay bhandari deserve the whole world, i print no retractions. also, the mc from the heist: monaco and rye? deserving of SO many rights. also.... rye and eris from the same book are the perfect chaotic friendship. we stan. also, in desire and decorum, literally anyone you hook briar up with is sweet. i love both of the options.
A pairing that I despise: i don’t ~despise~ any pairings (except for dr. ramsey and literally anyone) but i one time saw a really beautiful edit of mal and nia from blades and while i admire the skill of the artist..... i simply do not ship it. i just get younger sister vibes with mal and nia. that is all.

It’s Tradition
Tumblr media
Pairing: Tyril Starfury x f!Elf!MC (Raine) | Blades of Light & Shadow
Word Count: 5k+ (oops)
Warnings: T rating - probably one of the fluffiest things I’ve ever written with the absolute mildest hints of suggestiveness (like not even, really)
A/N: Happy holiday’s! This little fic is a special gift for @missameliep for the Choices Potluck hosted by the wonderful @homeformyheart. I truly hope you enjoy it!
~~~~~
The holidays in Undermount were very different from what Raine had experienced at home in Riverbend. To be fair, she really hadn’t experienced much growing up in the small village. The farmer that Kade and she lived with couldn’t offer much as gifts, some years there being none at all. But they always brought in a tree from the great forest just beyond the town. And every year they would hang their handmade clay ornaments upon the branches and rejoice with one another and celebrate the year.
When the farmer passed away and it was just Kade and Raine left, they still tried to carry on the tradition. Usually by helping set up the tree in the main lobby of the Dancing Pig Tavern for all of the town and patrons to enjoy. And then, of course, the two would scrimp and save just enough to purchase each other a little token.
So this year, as Raine spent her first holiday season away from Riverbend and away from Kade, she was feeling a little down. The first reason being the latter of the two issues. Kade had decided to stay in White Tower to work and study in the archives. Raine decided to spend the past few weeks in Undermount with Tyril. It had been a tearful goodbye - considering that they had just reunited.
But it wasn’t all bad. Tyril, Valir, and Adrina had been most accommodating. With their home newly renovated, the Starfury’s were more than happy to host her for the holidays. But again, the holidays in Undermount were different.
“So you don’t have a tree?” Raine had asked Tyril and Adrina as they were out for their morning stroll through the market.
Adrina picked up a few rolls of blue, silver, and white fabric, pinching the material between her fingers, before placing them in her basket and leaving a few coins for the shop owner. “Why would we have a tree?” she asked, her brows pulling together.
Raine looked between the younger Starfury sibling to the other, her own brows shooting up in surprise. “If you don’t have a tree then where do you hang your ornaments? Or place your gifts?”
Tyril and Adrina gave each other a sideways glance before Tyril nodded and cleared his throat. “Raine, that’s… we don’t do things like that here.”
Raine frowned as she followed behind the pair. This was going to be a very different holiday, indeed.
~~~~~
“So, Raine,” Tyril began from where they sat on the settee in the Starfury manor. The large fireplace encased the room in warmth and a burning orange glow. “Tell me more about this holiday tree.”
Raine shifted in her seat next to the blue elf. She curled her legs up under her body and turned to face him. She couldn’t get over how surprisingly relaxed he looked, his armor long removed with only a thin, white tunic covering his chest and brown trousers on his legs.
“Well, it’s a tradition we had back home in Riverbend,” she began, adjusting the blanket that covered her lap. “Everyone in town did it. We would all go to the forest and chop down a tree we thought was the best then set it up in our home. Then we would decorate it with little ornaments we had made throughout the years.”
Tyril nodded silently, a reserved smile playing on his lips.
“And then Kade and I usually sang songs while the farmer listened,” she continued, not even noticing the other elf’s expression. “And he would make the best cider and Kade and I would try to stay up as late as we could just to enjoy the tree. We usually fell asleep right on the floor.”
Tyril let out a soft chuckle at that and Raine could feel the heat on her cheeks. It wasn’t from the fire.
“And tell me about these gifts you mentioned,” Tyril said as he shifted his body towards Raine, his arm resting on the back of the settee.
Raine smiled, Tyril’s interest encouraging her to talk more. “Well, we didn’t have much growing up. But the farmer almost always got us some little item or trinket. He would wrap them up with parchment and place them under the tree. Then in the morning after we set up the tree, Kade and I would get to unwrap the gift.”
Raine let out a wistful sigh at the many memories she shared. All the little items she had received over the years and just the thought of being together. It made her chest ache with nostalgia.
“When the farmer passed away, Kade and I continued the tradition in our own way,” she added, her fingers worrying a thread on the blanket. “We never missed a year. Well, except for, you know…”
She fell silent as everything came back. The thought of not having her brother around this year really seemed to put a damper on her mood. Combined with the fact that she was in a mostly foreign place without the usual holiday traditions, it made Raine very somber.
“I’m sorry Kade isn’t here,” Tyril said, his voice breaking through the quietness of the room. “And I’m sorry we don’t have the same traditions as you had back home. But I truly hope that this year is just as special for you.”
Raine couldn’t help the genuine smile that formed on her lips. Without hesitation, she leaned over on the settee placed a gentle kiss on Tyril’s cheek. “Thank you,” she said before sitting back on her side. She reveled in the violet flush that fanned across his cheeks.
“You’re, um, very welcome,” Tyril stuttered before quickly turning his face away from her stare.
“Maybe this year won’t be so bad,” Raine thought to herself, a sly smirk crossing her lips.
~~~~~
“So what traditions do you have?” Raine asked Adrina as the two elven girls sat in the Starfury heir’s room. They had gone through just about every gown Adrina had owned, searching for something perfect for Raine to wear to the holiday dinner, which would be happening in just a few days.
“There aren’t many,” Adrina stated, before pulling out a purple and green ensemble that quickly had Raine’s nose scrunching in distaste. “Generally each house hosts their families large meal on The Night of Eve then afterward everyone gathers in the square for the lighting of the fountain.”
Raine toyed with a red ribbon attached to the back of one of the more extravagant gowns. “That sounds... nice.”
Adrina hummed in response, her attention focusing on the blue, silver, and white fabric that was partially patched together on a mannequin in the corner of the room. “Yes, then the following day we enjoy a plentiful brunch.”
“And that’s all?” Raine asked, to which Adrina just nodded her head in response. “Well, that sounds…”
“Simple?” Adrina offered, making the two girls laugh. “It truly is, in fact, I rather like the idea of gifts and trees.”
Raine sighed. “Yes, me too.”
Adrina looked back to her new friend before her gaze shifted out through the open window of her room. The gears were already turning as the two continued through their afternoon activities.
~~~~~
The sunrises in Undermount were unlike any that Raine had seen growing up. And on this particular morning - having been unable to get a full night’s rest - Raine was awake and alone out on the terrace just off the side of the manor. She pulled the silken robe tighter around her body, the chill from the frosty air whipping slightly through her hair sent shivers through her spine.
But she would brave the cold to witness the beautiful hues of purple, orange, and pink that filtered through the deep blue sky as the sun made its way over the horizon.
“Good morning,” a calm voice sounded from behind her. Raine smiled, glancing just over her shoulder as Tyril made his way to her side. “You’re up early.”
He was dressed in a more formal outfit, still divested of his usual armor. He wore a tight-fitted black tunic, emblazoned with silver trim. His trousers were dark blue and flattered his skin perfectly.
Raine turned back to face the morning sky. “Couldn’t sleep,” she provided.
Tyril only hummed a response.
“It’s beautiful,” Raine said, the sun catching against her purple eyes, making them sparkle in the morning sky.
“It truly is,” Tyril replied.
Raine slowly turned her head to face her companion, her breath hitching when she realized he was already staring back at her. She couldn’t help the quiet laugh that bubbled from her lips.
“I think Mal has been a bad influence on you,” she said with a smirk, bumping her shoulder into his. Before she could pull away he reached out quickly, wrapping his arm around her waist to keep her close, his fingers resting gently on her hip.
“I take offense to that,” he replied, though there was no true animosity to the words.
The two stood in companionable silence, allowing the cold morning air to wash over them as they continued to watch the sunrise from over the mountain. Raine let her head rest on his shoulder until the sun was almost fully visible. And when she felt the tender press of his lips on the top of her head, she let out a contented sigh.
“Are you ready for dinner tonight?”
“Yeah, I think so,” she replied before a slight frown tugged at her lips. “But I wasn’t able to find anything nice to wear.”
Tyril shifted his arms around, wrapping his other arm around her waist and pulling her against him so he could look directly at her face. “Do not worry about that,” he said before leaning down and giving her a sweet kiss.
Raine sighed against his lips, her hands coming up to rest on his chest. She enjoyed the kiss for several minutes, relishing in the feel of his warm lips against her cold one. Reveling in the way his hands hugged her frame just right. Just simply enjoying the feel of being with him.
But as the ache in her lungs indicated, they soon had to break for air
“If you say so,” she finally replied, though the thought still nagged at the back of her mind.
Tyril just smiled before leaning in and leaving a chaste kiss on her lips again. “Good, now then, I think maybe you should try to get a little bit more rest before dinner tonight.”
At that moment it finally hit her how absolutely tired she was. “I think you’re right,” she agreed before the two untangled themselves from each other.
As Tyril and Raine left the terrace, she felt warm fingers brush against hers. She instantly intertwined her own with his as they walked through the grand hallway. A few minutes later they stood just outside Raine’s room. The pair said their goodbyes - though there were fewer words shared and more kissing - and soon Raine was easing the door closed behind her.
The moment the door clicked into place, Tyril turned on his heels and headed down the hall. He had much to do and so little time.
~~~~~
When Raine finally woke, the sun was high in the sky. She let out a loud yawn and turned in the bed, burying her face deeper into the pillow. It wasn’t until a small gust of wind filtered in through her open window did she remember what today was.
The Night of Eve.
With a huff, Raine withdrew from her bed and quickly got to work on making herself presentable. She shuffled through her wardrobe, searching for something not too boring or torn or old that she could wear for the night. She was just about to decide between her turquoise dress or the brown dress when there was a knock on the door.
“Adrina!” Raine greeted as she opened the door to see the blonde elf standing there, arms tucked behind her back. “What do you have there?”
As Adrina entered the room the smile on her face only grew wider. Instead of answering, she simply thrusted the item out from behind her and into Raine’s grasp. Raine looked down at the garment that was now draped in her arms. A beautiful and delicately detailed blue, silver, and white gown.
“Surprise!” The Starfury heir exclaimed as her arms shot into the air.
Raine parted her lips but couldn’t speak. Her eyes grew wide, brows shooting to her hairline as she stared agape at the dress then back up to Adrina. It was several long seconds before she could conjure up any words.
“You… you made this?” Raine asked the question though she knew the answer. When Adrina excitedly nodded her head Raine only shook hers in disbelief. “Did you make this for me? For tonight?”
“Of course! Well, at first I wasn’t sure what I was doing with it but when we spoke a few days ago in my room I suddenly knew exactly what I was to do with it.” Raine could only let out a disbelieving laugh as her fingers ran across the smooth fabric. “Now go on,” Adrina continued. “Put it on! We have a dinner to enjoy!”
Several minutes later, Raine stepped out from behind the changing partition. She ran her hands down the front of the dress, flattening out the nonexistent wrinkles. As Raine stepped up to the mirror, she couldn’t help but smile at the reflection.
“It’s perfect,” Adrina said, her own smile beaming brightly. “Now come here, sit,” she said, motioning to the empty seat in front of her. Raine complied, taking a seat as Adrina stood behind her. “I’m thinking braids…”
~~~~~
A couple hours later, Raine stared again at her reflection. It was unbelievable. Her usually long, blonde hair was wound up into an intricate braid that wrapped around her head. Several loose strands framed her delicate face which now bore hints of kohl and rouge.
“Now then,” Adrina began, making her way to the door. “I think it’s time I finish getting ready myself. See you in an hour?”
Raine nodded her head, unable to keep her gaze from the reflection looking back at her. When the door clicked behind her, signaling Adrina’s departure, she let out the massive breath she had been holding.
Raine was not one to dress fancy or parade around in flashy garments like high society. She was used to sleeping in bedrolls spread upon the earth and scrounging for scraps just to make it by. So at this moment, with silk wrapping her and her lavender skin purposefully tinted pink, she felt different - a good different.
Knock knock knock.
The sudden sound of fingers rapping against her bedroom door broke her from her daze. She honestly wasn’t even sure how long she has been sitting there alone in the room.
“Come in,” she called out, her heart pounding at the thought of another person seeing her dressed so out of character.
Seconds later the door crept open and a very familiar figure strode through the door.
“Raine, it’s time for-”
Tyril quickly stopped his announcement once his eyes landed on her. Raine had never seen him like this. He was frozen in the doorway. His long, raven hair was pulled back from his face in an elaborate braid and half-bun style, the other half flowing down past his shoulders and back. His outfit from earlier - with the silver detailing - all made sense now after seeing her own dress. But perhaps the most surprising of all was the shocked expression he wore. His lips slightly parted and eyes wide - pupils were nearly blown black entirely.
Raine smiled shyly before tucking one of her loose, blonde strands behind her pointed ear. “Hi.”
Her voice must have broken Tyril from the spell and he quickly schooled himself, lips closing together again, though there was a distinct curve at the corners. “Good evening, Raine,” he greeted, body bowing before her, causing a small giggle to escape her mouth.
“And evening to you,” she replied with an exaggerated curtsy that only made him roll his eyes fondly.
Tyril stepped further into the room, closing the door behind him. Ever so slowly he glided to her until his body was mere inches from hers. He reached out for her hand - which she gave willingly - and pressed a gentle kiss to her knuckles.
“You look so lovely,” he stated casually.
His eyes never left hers as his lips slowly mapped a path from the back of her hand, over her palm, and across her wrist. Raine didn’t even realize she was holding her breath until he pulled away, allowing the hands to drop back down but never breaking apart. The smile he gave her made the tops of her cheeks and tips of her ears flush to a delightful lilac and Raine had to look away for a moment. She surely expected that if they were outside the heat radiating from this exchange would melt all the snow around them.
“Thank you, as do you,” she replied, her voice coming out as a murmur.
She felt the tender squeeze of his hand, making her look back up. “We should go, dinner’s almost ready,” he said before gently tugging at her hand. Raine simply nodded and followed him out the door.
The long walk to the dining hall had been… fine. Though Raine was nervous - even though she had no reason to be, she had been around Tyril’s family for several weeks now and it was only going to be them at the dinner - something deep inside her still felt out of place. The only thing keeping her tethered to the world was the feel of his warm, nimble fingers intertwined with her own.
“Ready?” he asked just before they stepped inside the hall.
She glanced up, locking eyes with the taller elf, and smiled. “Ready.”
A moment later the servants opened the grand doors before them, revealing the lavish dining hall. The smell hit her first, a variety of cooked meats and vegetables that filled her senses causing her to smile warmly.
The second thing to hit her was a familiar voice - several familiar voices, actually - greeting her. “Raine!” the voices called out in unison.
Raine blinked once, twice before settling on her traveling companions that we seated around the table next to Adrina and Valir. Mal, Imtua, Threep, and Loola were all smiles as Tyril gently led her into the room. She hadn’t even noticed they were moving until Tyril pulled out a chair for her and guided her into the seat.
“You.. you’re here,” she couldn’t believe her eyes. It had been months since the entirety of her adventuring group had been in the same town, let alone the same room.
“Well don’t be so surprised to see us, Kit,” Mal snarked, though the quick twitch of his lip let her know it was all for show.
“We couldn’t say no!” Nia began from where she sat next to Mal. She reached across the table, gently enveloping Raine’s hand in hers. “When Tyril reached out to us there was only one answer.”
“Yeah, Landrat. Even I was starting to miss dry land,” Imtura said with a laugh, her hand clapping against Raine’s back.
Raine’s eyes grew wide as she stared around the table at her friends. It was then she realized that there were tears in her eyes and a gigantic smile on her face. She turned abruptly to Tyril who sat just on her other side.
“You did this?” she asked incredulously.
Tyril didn’t answer, instead he grabbed his goblet from the table. He raised it above his head, waiting for the others to follow suit. Raine nearly fumbled with her own but was quick to clutch it in her shaky hands.
“I would like to propose a toast,” the tall, blue elf started once everyone had their drink ready. Even Loola and Threep sat with their goblets at the ready in front of them. “A toast to togetherness. A toast to friendship. A toast to The Night of Eve. And a toast to Raine, for without her, none of this - us - would be possible.”
A round of cheers and “huzzahs” rattled off from the table and moments later the first course was served.
As the dinner went on, the group opted to catch up. Imtura boasted about her time at sea with her crew while Nia and Mal spoke of their time together in White Tower. Even Threep joined in, sharing reviews of all the delectable snacks and treats the castle provided him and Loola.
Raine couldn’t keep the smile from her face, not even for a moment. Even though Kade wasn’t there, she was still with her family - her chosen family.
After dinner, the group made their way into the town center and found a good spot to watch the lighting of the fountain. Raine’s eyes dance in the starlight, taking in the large number of elves that were now flooding the Undermount streets. She smiled at the sight of young and old gathered around. She looked up, barely catching the stare of icy, blue eyes.
“This has been wonderful,” Raine stated, her arm winding around Tyril’s torso. “Thank you for this.”
Tyril placed his arm over her shoulder, pulling Raine closer to him. “You are welcome, my dear. I hope this has been enjoyable for you.”
Raine tilted her head to rest against him. “Of course.”
Their friends quickly gathered around them and a few minutes later - with a little magical help - the large fountain in the center of town burst with millions of dazzling lights. They trailed in the air and danced over the fountain, cascading down the rippling waterfall until landing with an elegant swirl in the pool below. The air around the plaza and fountain crackled with energy and Raine’s breath stilled at the spectacle.
It was a long time before the glittering light show started to die down and most of the other elves made their way back home. Imtura - who had grown impatient - turned to the group. “So, we done here or what?”
“Imtura!” Nia admonished, her eloquent face scrunching into a scowl which had Mal, Imtura, and Raine all laughing.
“Imtura’s right,” Tyril said, his sympathetic gaze turning to Nia. “It’s about time we head back to the Starfury manor.”
Without much protest, the group made their way back along the city streets and before long they were walking back into the Starfury’s home. The group walked along the expansive entryway, chatting amongst themselves.
“That was fun,” Raine said, though her usual jovialness wasn’t quite there. “Are you all staying long? What else do you guys want to do?” She watched as Adrina, Tyril and the rest of the group all glanced around one another. Raine pursed her lips and raised a brow. “What?
“Let’s go to the foyer,” Adrina said, a small grin playing on her lips. Raine noted how everyone quickly agreed and pointedly ignored her questions but she simply shrugged and followed the others.
Raine was the last to enter the room, too busy chatting with Loola and Threep at the back of the group. But once she entered the room their conversation was quickly brought to a stop. She could feel the familiar prick of tears at the back of her eyes which were blown wide at the sight in front of her.
There, in the center of the foyer, stood a tall, lonesome yet full tree. A tree that had not been there the day before. Raine’s eyes traveled the length of the tree before she turned to face Tyril and Adrina.
“What is this?” she said, not bothering to hide the tremble in her throat.
“Surprise!”
Raine whirled around, her attention quickly stopping on Mal, Nia, and Imtura who were holding up an assortment of colorful clay objects. She quickly realized they were all ornaments - all of different shapes and sizes.
She was in awe at the scene in front of her. Her brain was feeling dizzy and for a moment all words escaped her until she was finally able to muster up enough brainpower to ask one question.
“How?”
Tyril stepped up and rested his hand on her lower back, guiding her closer to the tree. “Well, when I reached out to everyone to invite them, I may have mentioned the traditions you were accustomed to.”
“And they sounded so lovely,” Nia added in, her face lighting up.
“And so I asked them to bring some of these clay ornaments you spoke of,” Tyril continued.
Mal stepped forward, showing the little bird and jewel-shaped ornaments in his hand. “Yeah, Kit, even I know of this tradition.”
“So we all wanted to help,” Imtura said, placing a brown colored ornament in Raine’s hand. It looked almost like a pirate ship, or maybe a half-moon, she wasn’t sure.
Raine looked down at the ornament in her hand. She could feel the tightness in her chest and the dampness that threatened to spill from her eyes. She looked up from her hand to the smiling faces of her friends - family - that surround her.
“Thank you,” she croaked, the sound coming out more of a hoarse whisper. “This… it’s so much and I… thank you all so much.”
Without warning, Raine slung her arms around the group, pulling them all into a tight embrace. There were some quiet protests - mainly from Mal and Imtura - but no one pulled away. Once Raine was satisfied with the hug, she released the group then quickly turned to the tree.
“Now then,” she began, stepping forward to the towering tree. “Let’s get to decorating.”
~~~~~
It was several hours later when the group started to drop like flies. They had spent their time decorating the tree and drinking many goblets of honey wine. Raine had even sung several of her favorite holiday songs, teaching them to her companions. But once Adrina and Nia let out several large yawns, Raine knew the night was almost done.
By the end, however, it was just Tyril and Raine left, sitting side-by-side on the settee. Adrina and her father had long retired to their sleeping chambers. Mal and Nia laid curled up together next to the fire and Imtura laid sprawled out on one of the many accent chairs in the room. Loola and Threep were purring softly on one of the cushioned window seats.
“Thank you, again,” Raine whispered, her head resting on Tyril’s shoulder.
She could feel his smile against the top of her head when his lips pressed against her hair. “You are more than welcome, my love.”
She couldn’t help but smile at that.
“So,” she began, her hand winding its way into his. “What do you say we sneak off and start our own holiday tradition?”
She could feel heat instantly radiate off the body next to hers. In the next moment, she was being pulled up from her spot on the settee and dragged down the hall to their sleeping quarters. She had to cover her mouth with her free hand to stop the giggle from bursting through her lips and giving them away.
It was a very, merry Night of Eve indeed.
~~~~~
When morning came, Raine was pleasantly surprised to see her friends gathered at the breakfast table for the large brunch Adrina had mentioned. She was even more surprised to see the assortment of neatly wrapped parcels under the large holiday tree in the foyer.
“When did you have time to do all this?” she asked Tyril as her companions and the Starfury’s made their way to the room.
“A man never reveals his secrets,” he said with a smirk, causing both Raine and Adrina to roll their eyes.
“He had the staff help early this morning,” Adrina admitted, causing the taller blue elf to pout and Raine to laugh.
As the group settled in around the tree, Raine looked around the group with a frown. “But, I didn’t get any of you anything.”
Tyril placed his hand on hers. “Don’t you worry about that. You being here has been a gift enough.”
Raine smiled before leaning in and placing a chaste kiss on his lips. “Okay but that was really cheesy,” she said, unable to contain the laugh that bubbled out.
Tyril merely huffed and moments later the group was passing around the many gifts from under the tree. Once all gifts were handed out and opened, the group began to laugh and chat amongst themselves.
“I have something else for you,” Tyril whispered against her ear, causing a shudder down her spine. “Wait here.”
Tyril hopped up from his spot and quickly walked outside the foyer space. The group grew silent as they watched the doors he had just walked out of. Moments later the sound of two sets of footsteps could be heard and when the doors opened back up Raine nearly toppled out of her seat and on the floor.
“Kade!” she yelled, her legs moving on her own as she ran across the room and pulled her brother into a tight embrace. “Gods, Kade, you’re here! How? What?”
“Happy Holiday!” Kade said, his arms winding around his sister’s back and pulling her close. “Tyril sent for me. I rode on a Drake all morning from White Tower. It was amazing!”
It was several long minutes before the siblings split apart. Raine ruffled her brother’s hair, the two laughing as they made their way back to the rest of the group.
“Glad you could make it!” Nia said, scooting over on the bench to make room for Kade. The rest of the group gave their own greetings to the younger sibling. Soon everyone was catching up and Raine was all smiles again.
“I hope this holiday was everything you remember,” Tyril said, his lips close to her ear.
Raine smiled and leaned back into the other elf, his arms wrapping instinctively around her waist. With a sigh, she tilted her head and placed a long, loving kiss on his lips.
“Actually,” she began once she broke away from the kiss, causing him to arch a brow. Raine merely smiled before snuggling back further into his embrace. “It’s better.”

So, despite PB barely giving a fuck about WLW, I decided to highlight the female LIs that they have actually treated quite well.
•NIA & IMTURA (Blades Of Light And Shadow):
These two were the only ones I romanced from BOLAS. Both of them had actual character traits, were useful to the team, had their own special relationship with MC whether it be platonic or romantic, and never felt sidelined compared to Mal and Tyril. Their relationship growth with MC was organic and clearly planned out well, instead of being thrown in just because. I love them.
•KAITLYN & BECCA (The Freshman Series):
Despite the first Freshman book basically forcing us onto Chris, I actually loved Kaitlyn's storyline in the first three books. Her and MC starting off as friends, a drunken kiss, and then coming to terms with their feelings. The second book dealt with her coming out story well and I could actually understand why she reacted the way she did. Her storyline in the third book pissed me off, but I actually liked it (Until Becca came along).
When Becca was announced as an LI, I switched so fast. The enemies to lovers that I hope we get with Poppy. Becca's character development was the best out of all the Freshman LIs and her relationship with MC quickly became my favorite. Despite her scenes being paywalled in the Sophomore, their growth as a couple and learning to trust each other was adorable. My first ever LI.
•SONIA (The Heist: Monaco)
As far as I'm concerned, she is the main LI of that book. Her Batman/Catwoman relationship with MC was cute and they were a good enemies to lovers route as well. The two learned to look past each other's careers, MC supported and uplifted her whenever Chicken Litte tried to bring her down, they had an engaging dialogue with each other, and I've replayed the book five times just to go through her scenes again. Perfection, she can arrest me anytime.
•AVA & STACY (It Lives In The Woods)
I notice that I like the romances alot more when they aren't the main focus of the book. Ava and Stacy each had their own problems that they were forced to face due to Mr. Red. They were the only LIs to care if MC died, both were ride or die for her. Their growth with MC was actually organic and fit into each of their personality. The fact that none of the LIs were forced on us helped out with it as well. You can actually choose who you want as an LI and I wish PB would learn to do that again.
•VAL (The Crown And The Flame):
Listen, I would include Annelyse. I would. But she was clearly not the most popular LI and it showed in how they treated her. Now, Val. She was my favorite as an LI and a friend. She and Kenna had such an amazing relationship with each other. The first scene that comes to my mind is when Val made the blood compact to her. She was devoted and ready to throw down for Kenna if she needed to. Even without diamond scenes, you can still see how their relationship plays out and she is the first one I romanced from the book.
That's all. I'm sure there is more, but those were the first ones that came to my mind. If you disagree or want to add another one, feel free. I just wanted to highlight this to calm me down after seeing how female LIs have been getting treated in recent books.

Hundreds of Tomorrows - (Mal x MC) - Blades of Light & Shadows
Hundreds of Tomorrows
Word Count: 3053
A/N: This is a little thing that I picture starting and happening before Nia, Tyril and MC (Raine) go behind the glass wall where only those with magic can pass. This was from chapter 11 (I think?) when they’re in the catacombs. I’m not very good at remembering details from the chapters.
I took a few liberties to change up what exactly happened behind the wall so it’s not exactly in line with the rest of BOLAS (please don’t hate me or send me messages about how wrong I am). Also, I freaking LOVE Threep and his banter/relationship with Mal.
This story comes at the request of @choicesobsessed  who sent a prompt for “Is that blood? ...No?” from a prompt list I posted a while ago. It fit perfectly with this idea I already had so ta-da!
Hope everyone reading this is doing well and staying safe! Please enjoy!
xoxo

“Kit, a word please?” Mal said inquisitively, his eyebrow raised in mock curiosity.  He motioned for Raine to follow him to a more secluded area.
“Keep your voice down.” He instructed as Raine followed him.
“Keep my voice down?” She questioned.
“You do realize the rest of the group is right over there…”
Mal sighed in agitation.
“Okay then, m’lady, let’s talk behind this here rock. Is that better?”
The two of them circled around a rather large boulder that was still not much further from the group.
“Oh much. Much better.” She smirked. “What’s your deal? We don’t have a lot of time and we need to check out what’s behind that magic wall.”
“Are you sure about this?” Mal asked, searching her eyes for the truth. “I mean like, really, totally, 100% sure?”
“Sure about what?” Raine asked, confused.
“Going behind the magic wall with only elf-boy to protect you? I don’t think it’s safe.”  Mal cut right to the point.
“Ooohhh….” Raine teased. “I see what this is about…”
She folded her arms in front of her chest and leaned back against the rock that was supposedly concealing their conversation.
“Nothing. It’s not about anything.” Mal squinted his eyes in frustration, stumbling a little bit and working very hard to make his point. He didn’t want to be obvious, but apparently he was failing miserably.
“Mmhmm.” Raine scoffed.  “Listen, I don’t only have Tyril to protect me. Nia is coming and so is Threep.”
“Raine.”
Mal looked down his nose at her, wishing she would realize this was actually not a time to joke. For him to be serious meant it really indeed was…serious.
“You cannot be serious. You think that cat-bat is going to be able to save you?”
“He is a nesper, Mal, not a cat-bat. You really need to stop calling him that. And I don’t know why you’re wasting my time right now.”
She stood up straighter, ready to confront him.
“We will be safe. Everything is fine. You’re acting this way mainly because you don’t want to be left here with Imtura AND you’re afraid of missing out on adventure. You’re upset that you’re not being included.”
Mal’s mouth hung open ready to protest, but Raine quickly closed the space between them kissed him on the cheek. She lingered a little bit and whispered in his ear.
“But I do think it’s awfully cute you’re so protective of me.”
She pulled away, looking him in the eye and giving him a quick wink, before walking away.
“Raine!”
Mal called out.
“Wait!”
She turned around, shoulders slumped, groaning in frustration. “What is it now?!”
“Just, be careful. Please. I…I don’t like not going in there with you…if anything happened – I – I –“
Raine stopped joking around, once she realized the serious tone Mal was using.
“Don’t worry – I’ll come back to you.” She nodded, confirming what she just said.
Raine then jogged towards Nia and Tyril who were waiting at the entrance to the wall.
--
“Look lover boy, I know that you’re smitten with our very own land rat, but you have got to calm down.”
Imtura was perched on top of a large black rock while Mal paced nervously back and forth in front of her, tossing a small pebble up and down.
“If you don’t stop tossing that ridiculous little rock, I’m going to smash you one more time into that magic wall and leave you for dead.”
Mal ignored her, continued pacing, but did at least stop tossing the rock.
“See here – there’s one thing that us sneaky humans have over your orc tribe. We have this sixth sense. This gut feeling about things. And I’m telling you something’s not right about all this. Any of this…it’s just really, really messed up…”
Mal was suddenly distracted looking deep into the eyes of a half-charred statue looking rock that had grabbed his attention.
“I mean, what the hell is that? This is not normal.” He said as he gestured to the piece of art he found.
“Nothing about this is normal. Pull your head out of your arse, boy. Look around you – has anything we’ve experienced the past few weeks been normal?
If you’re looking for normal you best leave now because it’s only going to get weirder if you ask me…” Imtura spat, picking something out of her jowls.
Mal mad a face, clearly disgusted by her behavior. “You’re one of a kind, you know that, Im?”
He wiped his hands along the front of his vest, suddenly feeling dirty. He huffed loudly as he plopped down on the ground.
“When are they going to be baaaack?!” He whined, keeping his eyes closed. “This is the worst!”
“That’s them. Mal!” Imtura was laughing, happy to see the rest of their crew. “They’re alive. They made it. Here they come!”
Threep was leading the crew, actually using his wings to fly, and hovering a little bit in front of everyone.
“Mal before you see her you need to know that…”
“I am fine!” Raine called from the back of the group leaning on Tyril and limping a bit. She was holding her side and trying her best not to grimace.
“Raine? What happened? Is she okay? Are you okay?”
Tyril gingerly helped Raine to sit down, Nia followed and tried to console Mal.
“She really is fine, Mal. I can heal her, don’t worry.  I just need a moment…”
“Is that blood?!” Mal asked, pointing to Raine’s side where a dark spot had begun to form beneath her hands.
“…No?” Raine lied, not wanting to upset him.
“Why is everyone more worried about Mal than the actual person who is injured?!” Threep squawked still flying above everyone else.
“Fix her. Fix her now.” Mal ordered, looking at Nia. “Do it. Let’s go – why are we waiting around?”
“I don’t want her to.” Raine’s voice was raised slightly and forceful.
“We do need to make a decision. We got what we came for, it’s time we head back. The longer we are here the longer we are in danger.” Tyril explained, adding pressure to the current situation.
“Mal – calm down.” Raine hissed, through gritted teeth, obviously in pain. “We need to get out of here. I don’t want Nia wasting life on me and I know I can make it. Let’s go.”
Mal tried to protest but Raine shot him down immediately with a cold and hard stare.
He resigned himself to the fact that Raine was not changing her mind.
“Let me help…” he tried to loop her arm around his shoulder, but Raine was stubborn.
“Raine – are you sure?” Tyril asked one final time.
Nia was nervously biting her lip, Imtura was staying quiet and Threep was nosing through Raine’s bag while the rest of them looked to one another to make a decision.
“Too bad jerky doesn’t make you feel better like it does me.” He chuckled, his head popping up out of the bag with a mouthful.
The entire group swiveled their heads to scowl at him.
Threep began to nervously laugh as he lowered himself back into the bag. “Wrong time to joke?” He asked, retreating quickly.
“Why does everyone keep asking if I’m sure?” Raine growled.  “First Mal, now you, Tyril. Have I ever not known my own mind?”
“Don’t answer that.” Threep instructed from inside Raine’s bag. Imtura had taken ownership of the satchel so that Raine wouldn’t be saddled with it.
--
The group walked in silence most of the way back to the Starfury house. Everyone was exhausted from the information they had found out about Kaya and the news they’d now be looking for a shard at the masquerade the next day. It seemed as though this troupe would never know a moment of rest – they continued on from one adventure to another in their quest against the Shadow Court.
Once they arrived at the manor, it was without question that each one of them would retire to their quarters in order to sleep well and rest before the ball. Without saying a word, all of them with the exception of Raine, communicated with each other, proving their trust and reliance on their teammates.
Imtura checked on Threep once more before handing the bag to Mal and telling everyone goodnight. Tyril nodded as he passed Raine over to him as well.
“She’s all yours.” He muttered under his breath.
“Raine, be well. I’m just down the hall if you need anything.” Nia cooed, almost prancing along the way to her room.
“I’ll take it from here.” Mal nodded, standing behind Raine.
She turned to look at him and arched an eyebrow. “What exactly are you taking where?”
“Lead the way, kit. I’m just gonna make sure you’re all tucked in, then you’ll be rid of me.”
--
Once to her room, Mal helped Threep out of the bag, accepting his content purring as thanks.
“Yeah yeah, calm down you crossbreed.” Mal stood up and waited by the door for Raine to get settled.
She was sitting on the edge of the bed, still holding her side.
“I’m not going to ask about it because I quite like my head being attached to my body…” Mal began.
Raine tried not to smile but she couldn’t help it. Being alone with Mal always made her feel better.
“I’ll be leaving you alone now if you’re all right. Did the bleeding actually stop?” He questioned, opening the door, about to leave.
“I’m not sure.” Raine said softly, suddenly preoccupied with the hem of her shirt. “I think…I think I need your help.”
“I’m sorry. What was that? Not sure I heard you correctly. Did you say you…you need my help?” Mal teased, closing the door and moving closer to her on the bed.
“Mal. Now isn’t the time. This is hard for me.” Raine answered, truthfully.
“Ah. Forgive me – it’s a real bucket of rainbows and sunshine for me right now too.” He tried to joke, sitting down next to her on the bed.
Silence hung in the air heavy and weighted as they stared stoically at one another. She looked at him and cursed herself for making him feel bad when all he was trying to do earlier was show he cared. He looked at her hoping she would one day understand just what she meant to him.
Clearing his throat, his voice weak and coming out more like a hoarse whisper, Mal asked, “What, um…what can I help you with? What do you need?”
“I need you to look at the wound and see if the bleeding has stopped.” Rain responded, snapping out of her silent reverie.
Her mind had suddenly travelled to the memory of Mal’s lips on hers and their skin touching together, the fire it created. This fire was not like the magic she was learning to make; it was different. Hotter. Deeper. Less fleeting. More substantial and real.
Mal nodded as Raine pulled her shirt up slightly, to reveal a small gash about an inch and a half long. The bleeding had stopped, and it didn’t appear to be deep but Mal could not know for sure.
“It’s no longer bleeding but that is the only thing I’m certain of.” He held her hand now, trying his best to be soft and caring.
“Do you have medicine?” He asked, suddenly standing up. “In your bag, the salve you’ve made before. Do you have any of it left?”
Raine was struggling to stay awake, so tired and fatigued from the day’s events and now weak due to her injury. She mumbled something as her eyes started to close.
“Raine! Raine.  Stay with me for just a little bit longer.” Mal was pulling item after item out of Raine’s bag.
“A stinger? You saved this from the Drakna?” He asked, completely dumbfounded as he pulled more and more random things from her satchel.
“Good gods you can hold a lot of stuff in here!” Mal smiled, looking at her now laying down on the bed.
“Huzzah! I found it!” He shouted triumphantly and held the small bottle up above his head as though it was the most sought-after treasure in the land.
Proud of himself, he sat down next to her on the bed as she was still fighting sleep.
“C’mere girl. Just hold still. That’s it.”
He softly applied the cream to her injury, rubbing around the edges as tenderly as his calloused fingers would allow.
“I’m sorry if it hurts.” He whispered, watching her face for any reaction. Her eyes were closed, and her breathing was steady.
Finding an old piece of cloth in her bag, Mal poured more of the salve on the rag and was able to tie it off around Raine’s small waist. She was quiet and compliant.
“I don’t know that I’ve ever seen you stay completely silent before, kit.  It’s kind of nice.” He mocked, drawing a big smile from the girl.
“Mal. That’s enough. Thank you. I’m quite settled now.”
He was now going through some drawers in a large armoir found in the corner of Raine’s room. Finding what he was looking for he tossed a long white nightgown on the bed.
“This’ll do. You need to change – I won’t look.”
“Yes, you will.” Raine challenged. “I wasn’t born yesterday, you know.”
“You’re probably right…” He scratched his chin, deep in thought about what he might see if he kept his eyes open.
Snapping himself out of it, he continued.
“…but here, I’ll help and then when you need me too I’ll look away. I promise.” He said those last two words with a sincerity Raine wasn’t sure existed in him.
“As I’ve said before, you do continue to surprise me, Mal the Rogue.”
Raine chuckled lightly, pulling the shirt she was wearing over her head. She winced a bit and Mal assisted as best he could, closing his eyes and turning his head away when she disrobed completely.
Mal helped her back into bed having turned down the covers, letting her head settle on two pillows, getting her under the blankets and stuffing her in tight.
Threep was out like a light in the corner, snoring loudly. Mal made note of it but decided against a comment, trying instead to focus all his attention on Raine.
“Thank you.” She whispered, looking up at him before her eyes closed for the night. “For all of this. I don’t deserve it after the way I treated you, today.  Really.”
“Now, now. I’m sure I’ll find a way for you to make it up to me sometime soon.”
She closed her eyes and inhaled deeply. “Will you stay with me, please?” She mumbled, falling into a rhythmic sleep almost immediately.
“Yes!” Mal fist pumped instinctively, getting what he had hoped for.
He said a silent prayer of thanks to the gods and walked around the bed to the other side. He laid down his weapons but as he took off his boots, realized again just how loud Threep was snoring. He threw one of his boots at him, waking the nesper up with a hiss.
“What was that for?!” Threep was more than agitated.
“You’re snoring!” Mal whispered harshly. “I’m staying the night and I need to get some shuteye.”
“You’re staying the night?” Threep’s eyes grew wide. “I should have gone with Imtura.”
“Yeah, you should have.” Mal quipped, “She’s the only one of the group who snores louder than you and wouldn’t be bothered.”
Threep stood up, made three circles and laid back down again, nestling against the wall and falling asleep again with a loud and dramatic huff.
Mal worked to get into bed but was careful not to disturb Raine. He stayed on top of the covers that Raine was underneath. He quickly realized in his effort to prop her up on the pillows, that meant there weren’t any left on the bed. So he got out of bed once again and grabbed the satchel to rest his head upon.
He sighed to himself with his hands resting on his stomach, content to be settled next to Raine, knowing she was okay, and most of all, that she wanted him to be with her, at least for tonight.
Realizing the adrenaline of this moment was keeping him awake, he rolled over onto his side to stare at the sleeping woman next to him.
“Will I stay?” Mal said quietly as his eyes took in her features.
He loved the light freckles that danced over her face, beneath her eyes and over the bridge of her nose. The way her lips were a soft shade of pink and her cheeks a natural rose; her golden hair in a tight braid that always rested on one side of her head, exposing the area of her neck that he knew he’d love to kiss over and over again.
Mal could not believe himself. He had never felt anything like these intense feelings. He was in shock that he already felt so strongly for someone he didn’t really know all that well.
He was completely certain that he loved the feeling of her hand in his. And he knew something was real if he was truthfully scared to think of anything happening to her when he wasn’t around to protect her.
He reached across her and took her hand once again, then softly and sweetly laced his fingers in between hers, his thumb rubbing small smoothing circles across her knuckles.
“What are you doing to me, kit? You may be making an honest man out of me…and I have never, ever, wanted to be one of those until now…”
He brought her hand to his lips and let them linger there for a while. He didn’t want to take his gaze off her for fear something would happen to change the moment, to change the way she felt about him, to change their relationship, if that’s indeed what it was.
He silently brushed a single tendril of hair off her face and leaned forward to kiss her forehead.
“Will I stay, Raine?” He whispered, smiling to himself.
“That’s not even a question. I will stay tonight and hundreds of tomorrows if you’ll have me, sweet girl.”

03 - in your arms
book: Blades of Light and Shadow pairing: Tyril Starfury x f!MC (Zeva) rating: PG-13 word count: 1,117 words
note: started with an idea of a rated story but we’re here with another fluff. It’s pretty short and I took days for this. enjoy!
Maybe it was the worn-out building or the moonlight that streamed from the windows and cracks on the walls. Whatever it was, Zeva was still wide awake. The guest room was way too big for her as she was so used to moderately-sized spaces her whole life. Her place with Kade was smaller. The places she and the group got to sleep in throughout the journey were already big enough for her. But this? She should’ve asked to share a room with Nia instead.
The brunette got out of bed and walked towards the window, trying to take the reality in. She was in Undermount, leagues away from Riverbend. How did her life get to this point? Traveling with a band of unlikely friends, trying to save her brother from whatever torture the Shadow Court could do to him. The view outside the window was too beautiful, almost surreal, but Zeva tried to remind herself. There was darkness creeping around, hiding underneath the pristine beauty.
“Zeva?”, a voice came along the creak of the door after unheard knocks, muted away by her thoughts. She looked over to see Tyril poking his head in through the gap.
“Hey. Come in.”, she smiled and leaned against the window frame, inviting him to join her late-night musing. When he stepped closer to the window and let the moonlight shined on him, Zeva couldn’t help but to trail her eyes over his features. Tyril stripped his armor already, leaving him in plain clothes, which seemed odd but nothing to complain about. She could’ve sworn his blue skin shimmered underneath the glow from how breathtaking he looked. “Can’t sleep?”, she finally spoke up to break their comfortable silence.
“Yes. I don’t know why, though. It’s probably the uncertainty of things that lies ahead.”, the elf looked far ahead to the city before them. His gaze looked clouded as if his mind wasn’t even at the same place as they were. Zeva carefully touched his elbow, making him switched his gaze from the view to her.
“We’ll never know what’s going to happen. I think our time together has taught us that enough.”, she flashed him a grin, trying to exude enough positivity for both of them. “One thing at a time, Tyril. For example, you’re here. You’re home. You’re together with your father and sister. That’s something you can enjoy at this moment.”
Whenever they were alone, it felt like the first time, back in that room at the safe house. She could feel the invisible power that pulled her towards him. Their eye contact alone felt electric. “I’m here with you too. That’s something I’m enjoying right now.”, his smile grew wider and her heart beat faster. Zeva stepped closer and leaned onto his side instead, hearing the quiet hitch of his breath when their skin touched. After a few moments, Tyril’s arm made its way around her waist, keeping her close to him.
It hasn’t been long since they stepped forward with their relationship or whatever they wanted to call it, but Zeva somehow knew that this was where she belonged. Not at Undermount or Riverbend, but next to him. Has it ever crossed her mind that she would fell for some elven lordling? Even the sight of the crown prince of Whitetower didn’t faze her from him. The human, being human, let the storm of feelings ran through her before she turned to her side to face him. “Is it the right time if I say I’m the one who wants you to kiss me right now?”
His cheeks gradually showed tints of purple from the heat flushing underneath the skin as he looked down at her. Her eyes twinkled by the moonlight and by the Gods, Tyril did wish to kiss her too. “I thought you’d never asked.”
She smiled and immediately stood on the tip of her toes to connect their lips. Her hands comfortably went around his neck, pulling him down in desperation, as if his kiss was the very air she breathed. She could feel his hands on her sides, holding on tightly to have her flushed against him. Zeva needed that support because the kiss made her weak in the knees.
“I want them all to know… That I’m yours.”, she whispered, in between kisses and stolen breaths. Her fingers tangled between his long locks as she gently nibbled on his lower lip, tugging on the soft flesh before he retaliated by lifting her to sit on the window ledge, her back facing the elven city. Zeva gasped at the vast space behind her, the distance between the window and the ground beneath them, but Tyril had his arm around her, secured and strong.
At this moment, she couldn’t help but let her soft laughter slipped between their lips. The adrenaline rushed through her whole body and she leaned forward, bringing her body closer to his. Their breaths got heavier as moments passed but Zeva didn’t want to pull away yet. She could never get over the sweet taste of his mouth, the musky scent of his skin, or the way his hair felt smooth to the touch.
It was Tyril who pulled away first. They stayed there, lips starting to get slightly swollen from the contact, as they paced their breaths. “Stay with me tonight.”, she whispered with her hands cupping the side of his face. “After what you had to see down in the catacombs… It may not be the same, but I feel your loss.”
There were sadness and pain flashed through his eyes but he cleared his throat, trying to keep all of it at bay. “I still cannot believe she’s gone. The real Kaya.”, his voice was quiet once more with his eyes looking down to his feet. It was during a moment like this when the elf seemed more and more approachable to her. Tyril had shown her his vulnerable side in private, letting her get to know him better.
Zeva carefully got off from the window ledge and quickly embraced him, clutching to the fabric of his clothes. “I’m really, truly sorry.”, she pressed her cheek against his chest, above his heart. “Whatever’s going to happen tomorrow, Kaya would be proud of you. You’d come for her.”
She knew he would still think he came too late but he stayed quiet. Instead, he wrapped his arms around her in return, leaning down to bury his face in the top of her head. His hold said a different thing this time. Tyril held her as if he didn’t want to lose her. The Shadow Court had taken his best friend. Now, he wouldn’t let them take his love.

BLADES BLADES BLADES
(long rambling post about the finale ahead)
I simply have no words. @playchoices this book is FREAKING GOD-TIER and I LOVE IT SO MUCH and I don't say this lightly. I can honestly be singing praises to Blades until the end of my days. I fell in love with it at first sight but it was aging like a fine wine with every chapter and becoming even better. I really hope book 2 will be equally powerful and I believe in the writers and the team, they've got to deliver. I don't even mind for them taking the time, even though I will miss the book so much. It was my greatest quarantine joy and made the first half of my 2020. Here are my messy thoughts about the finale because I have finally found something new to nerd out about and Blades deserves all the love in the world.
First, the fight was epic. The Shadow Court lady was gorgeous, even though we had to end her. Nia the Dreadlord was SO ICONIC. The way she wanted to break through the darkness, how she controlled it, and her self-sacrifice. Speaking of which, I really regret not letting the timer run out, because, from the experience of Bloodbound, I knew there had to be something interesting, but I didn't have much time to think and kinda assumed that if you don't kill Nia she just kills herself or the Dreadlord does it or something. But I saw screenshots of everyone dying and... wow. It especially hit me how Tyril fought until the end, even when he was already stabbed - characters with that much inner passion and determination are my everything, and it was so sad and definitely how he didn't deserve to go. I'm kind of a sucker for dark endings that show "what could have been" and aren't actually canon or can be avoided (like in It Lives series), because they have a lot of depth and this alternate reality makes you really appreciate the times with your LI and friends.
The Nia art was AHHHHHHH. How come this book blessed me with such amazing, epic LIs and I'm supposed to choose between them??? I adore all of them, but I have a special soft spot for Nia and Tyril since their stories are truly god-tier. I romanced Nia from the very first chapter (and then Imtura a bit), but switched to Tyril recently, and I don't regret it one bit because he's amazing and incredible and I love him so much. But during these scenes where MC told Nia to resist darkness I was constantly thinking of how it would hit differently if I romanced Nia until the end, because I'm a MASSIVE SUCKER for tropes when someone's pure love breaks the spells or darkness in the other person. It kinda reminded me of the Bloodbound finale when the LI did it for us. I just have to replay one day and romance Nia, even though it will be sooo hard for me not to flirt with Tyril.
I knew the fandom would explode at the option of flirting with Aerin. I myself am not a huge fan of romancing him but I chose the seduction option anyway because I was curious, and it failed me because I didn't have history with him which cracked me up so much 😂 Then Kade punched him and it was truly something - you go, Kade! I wonder what consequences will it have in book 2, I was almost debating setting him free so we could see him again. He was a good villain. I also laughed at the "sack of potatoes" line.
MC with the Blade of Light was just... I FELT that writing. Like there was fire inside them. Like they were fire. Speaking of which, the writing in the finale was so, so good, I can't remember when it was that good for the last time. It was worth all the hiatuses.
THE SCENE WITH MEDALS GAVE ME SUCH A HUGE STAR WARS A NEW HOPE ENDING VIBE. I was so proud of the squad, they've come so far and reached a better understanding of themselves on a personal level.
I played a 30 diamond scene with Tyril and I'm speechless. I honestly don't know where I can ever find someone like him because he raises my relationship standards so highly. It was wonderful to go on a real date with him and have some relaxed fun as a couple. He said "my MC" and oh my freaking God that was awesome. Their romantic exchanges are always the best. They are cute, poetic, sincere and don't feel forced. There were so many indications of true love between them, and it's like PB wanted to feed us Tyril stans well today because the scene was simply neverending (I was playing it for such a long time, it seemed endless) and they just kept professing their love for each other and that's how you write satisfying, amazing diamond scenes that you don't regret buying and would buy all over again (take note, Witness). I'm a huge Damien Nazario stan and finally I found a LI with diamond scenes that are just as epic and emotionally charged as his. I feel like Tyril and MC's dynamics even remind me of Damien and MC's a little bit (and the two do have some similarities, but I'll probably make another post about it someday)
And the sex!!! I'm not a huge smut fan because I'm ace/demisexual and those things are not very relatable for me (that's also why books like The Nanny Affair are a bit cringe to me, just not my piece of cake), but I LOVE good sex scenes where the two characters have a strong emotional connection and genuine love for each other (totally a demisexual point of view). I was smiling and giggling like a little girl, especially when they were talking about making sounds and doing it in public (again, I somehow thought back to the Eiffel Tower scene with Damien/Dames and it made me laugh). And then he said those beautiful things like "you complete me" and ahhhh... Tyril loves us so much. We love him so much, too. MC just wants to be with him and assures that he grew as a person, even if he always doubts himself. It's true, he had the most amazing character development.
I will have to fully stick to romancing Nia on the next replay, I'm curious what her diamond scene was like. I have a feeling it's just as adorable and wholesome and has a lot of complexity. God, I really felt for a second like she's gonna die, PB gave me a scare as it did feel final and I was like "did they really just...?". I don't know much about other LI scenes but I heard Imtura's was cute (and you could shout "that's my orc girlfriend" which itself is great), and Mal wanted to open the orphanage and wow I'm so proud. On a related note, it's freaking great that they give all LIs similar scenes but don't copy-paste their dialogues like in some books, there are clear differences as they all have a unique distinctive personality. And, I forgot to mention that Threep and Loola are the best bat-kitties! (even though they wouldn't approve of this term)
I was on my second hour of playing that chapter (yeah, it was like, the longest one ever! Maybe it's because I was excitedly sharing screenshots with a friend and freaking out the whole time) when the book finally seemed to be coming to an end. I love how my MC fell asleep in Tyril's arms and then we had this nightmare that foreshadowed book 2. I'm glad they gave us a glimpse of what to expect (imagine if we didn't know it will have a sequel, plus the finale had a bit of a standalone feeling, and then boom! Surprise). I fully hope this book will have a book 2, book 3, and a Christmas special 😂 It's just so, so incredible, and this universe deserves expanding like no other.
I hope PB knows how we all collectively love it, and I also hope they'll learn from the success of Blades and will write more books where the funny banter and serious moments are balanced, the friendship group feels natural and like a family, the plots are breathtaking and the LIs are god-tier. It's obvious how much heart Andrew and the crew put into it, and I'll be patiently waiting for book 2, however long it takes. Hopefully, not too long, but like they said, masterpieces take time to create!

find you in the night | Mal x MC
Pairing: Mal Volari x h!MC (Elwyn)
Word count: 2600+
Summary: A little conversation at sixty-three feet in the air. Or: Mal invites Elwyn to see the abandoned wonder of Westavia Woods.   Title taken from Andrew Belle’s “In My Veins.”
+
+
+
“This is a lot less fun than you said it would be.”
“I dunno. I’ve got a pretty spectacular view from where I’m standing,” Mal counters from where he leans over the edge, no doubt getting an eyeful.
Though she can’t see the smirk on his face, given that she’s too busy climbing up the side of a castle, Elwyn knows it’s there. The handhold she chose gives way under her palm, tearing her attention away from the man above. She digs through the vines and finds another, her nails scratching at the stone in a way that sends a shiver up her spine – and not in a good way, either.
“A little help down here?” she calls up.
In the span of a second, Mal straddles the turret’s wall and waggles his fingers for her to take. Elwyn frowns up at him, even as her boots slip across the protruding stone blocks. “There’s no way that’s safe. Throw me a rope or something.”
“It’s perfectly safe!” he defends. His confidence dims when he eyes the distance between them again. “Safe-ish. C’mon, kit, we haven’t got all day. Sun’s gonna set before you manage to inch your way up here–”
“Fine. Give me your damn hand, then.” She huffs, grinning all the while – he answers in kind with his own as he leans down and grips her hand. His skin is warm from the sun-baked stones, his palm rough from spending a lifetime scaling such structures for treasure.
“That’s it,” he coaxes. “Up and over.”
She climbs the rest of the way up and throws a leg over the wall, drawing in a breath to calm her nerves. She sucks in another when she takes in their view.
“Oh, wow.”
“I know.”
The castle they sit atop, formerly owned by some pompous asshole (Mal’s words, not hers, though she tends to agree with his sentiments regarding the upper class), sprawls across several acres.
Or, at least, it once had. Now, some hundred or so years since its abandonment, much of it has fallen into disrepair. The gatehouse and several of the towers are nothing more than moss-coated rubble. Dense sheets of vines crawl their way up and over the remaining towers and keep. The courtyard is now an extension of the forest, trees and shrubs filling the neat square where people once bustled about.
What’s left of the castle towers high above Westavia Woods. The name is a bit of a misnomer, considering the massive spread of forest between Undermount and Whitetower. After leaving the elven city and winding down through the Salus Mountains (while battling a few trolls along the way), they’d stopped here to rest. Tyril had called the area Tel’ eath, which roughly translated to ‘the endless.’ Elwyn didn’t need him to expand on that one.
The view before them is an ocean of green, the forest stretching as far as the eye can see. Already low in the sky, the sun traces the line of the horizon a brilliant gold. Birds soar across the landscape, their forms thrown into sharp relief.
“I thought it’d be nice to get away.” Mal glances her way and lets out a sigh of content. “Glad to see I was right.”
“Like an adventure from our adventure?”
“Exactly.” He reaches down into his bag and produces a small bottle. The golden liquid inside almost shimmers in the waning sunlight. “Swiped this from the winery while you were grabbing the mangy cat-bat his own bottle.”
Popping out the cork with the tip of his dagger, Mal hands it off to her for the first sip. The taste is sweet, almost to the degree of too much, before the mellow hint of herbs emerges to soothe the dulcified liquid. If the Celestial icewine was sunshine-and-snow, the honey-wine is a gentle wind through a willow tree, or the first bite of autumn. Elwyn thinks of the field of meadowsweet on the eastern edge of Riverbend. How she would spend afternoons hidden in the dense thicket, her nose in a book of fantastical places like Cordonia, or La Huerta, or Lykos, or Brooklyn.
“I can see why Threep likes it,” she says, taking another sip before passing it back to Mal.
Rolling her shoulders to ease the muscles now sore from her ascent, she indulges in the scenery. From this height, she can easily spot camp, where the steady stream of smoke from their fire snakes up through the tree cover. Their friends’ voices are nothing more than a distant thrum, indecipherable on the wind.
“I’ve never climbed something so tall. There was an old fortress south of Riverbend that I went to the top of, but it was only three stories high. And the view was nothing like this.”
“All by yourself?” he teases, making a show of licking his lips clean of the wine. “And here I thought you hadn’t taken part in a single adventure until I came along.”
“It wasn’t much of an adventure. And I went with the town blacksmith.”
“Ah. What’s his name, then?”
“Her name is Simona.”
Mal hums a tone of interest, one eyebrow peaked. “You’re just full of surprises, aren’t ya?”
She levels a look of her own at him. “You did see me make out with that mermaid, didn’t you?”
“It’s not like I was ogling you two,” he points out with a scoff. “Not that you’ll ever hear me admit it again, but I was jealous.”
“Oh, I know. You’re not exactly subtle about it.”
“I’d try to hide it, but you seem to see right through me.” He’s grinning as he says it, but there’s a softness in his gaze that wasn’t there weeks ago.
It’s his only tell that she’s been able to spot. Maybe because he lets her, she considers, and the thought warms her, oddly enough.
Turning from her companion, Elwyn scans the farthest edge of the forest as best she can, looking for the age-old sign of civilization: right angles. Even far beyond her sight, she knows that the great city of Whitetower is still many, many miles away. The thought of visiting the capital city has her torn in two.
On one hand, it’s somewhere she’s always wanted to go, after seeing a painting of the sparkling, white castles rising high into the sky, the cobblestone streets below filled with the smudged outlines of its citizens. After living most of her life in a tiny, backwater town, she longed to experience a real, bustling city filled to the brim with people.
On the other hand, she knows that it’s the last stop on their adventure through Morella. Elwyn has no doubt that they’ll find the last shard; has no qualms about fighting the Shadow Court; has no objection to doing whatever it takes to get her brother back.
She can only hope that her friends make it out alive.
A quick tug on her braid brings her out of her woolgathering.
“Penny for your thoughts.”
“Wondering what awaits us in the city,” she answers, trying her best to hide the anxiety she feels.
Mal rolls his shoulders in a lazy shrug, exuding a carefree appearance. It’s a good act, she’ll give him that.
“Destruction, devastation… death. But that’s the usual for Whitetower.”
“I know you don’t want to return, but I’m glad you’re coming.”
“It’s not that,” he says with a shake of his head. “I’d always planned to go back, of course, what with my sister still living there. But that sort of visit would be a quick in-and-out, do a bit of business, and be off before anyone who cared to know even suspected.”
Squinting out at the horizon, he sighs before flashing her a wry grin. “I have a feeling we’ll be making quite the entrance for ourselves this time.”
She watches the grin fade away as his brown eyes search hers.
“I have few memories of my village,” she tells him, “but not all of them are good. And I’m not only talking about the night it was destroyed. So, I understand about wanting to leave the past where it lies.”
“I’d be lying if I hadn’t thought about it burning down to ash. Parts of it, at least,” he amends. “I don’t wish any harm on the citizens.”
“I’m guessing those parts would be the castle.”
“Yeah,” he murmurs, something dark flashing in his eyes. “Just those.”
Before them, the sun has disappeared. It throws its last light out across the treetops, a vain attempt to keep its hold on the day. The night arrives like a deep, blue blanket thrown over the sky. High above them, stars twinkle into existence, materializing in droves. It’s as if someone has flicked a white paintbrush across the heavens. A cool wind rushes past; Elwyn shudders along with the vines.
She thinks of Kade and the realm he’s trapped in. Can he see the night sky from wherever he is? Can he keep himself sane by listing off the constellations, something that used to annoy the piss out of her growing up? Can he even still be alive?
She thinks of Kaya, frozen in death, her fear sculpted across her glass form, all alone at what seemed like the bottom of the world. Of all the terrible thoughts that bubble up, Elwyn thinks the worst might be her hands. How they were raised to shield herself from the attack, how that same instinct of survival runs deep in everything, no matter the species. Had she known what was coming? Or was there surprise hidden somewhere behind all that fear?
“Should we have… done something for Kaya?” she asks, hating how small her voice sounds.
“She was beyond our help.”
“I know that. But it still feels like we abandoned her. We left her down there.” Elwyn scrubs at her eyes, wishing she could banish away the immediate well of tears. “I keep thinking about the last time I saw Kade. He had that same expression. What if he thinks there’s no rescue coming? What if he does, though, and we can’t? What if–”
“Hey, hey,” Mal cuts off her worried rambling. He cups her face and drops a kiss to her forehead, and then another just under her eye. Something squeezes tight in her chest at the gesture. “You’ll worry yourself in circles like that.”
“I know,” she whispers, her hand covering his. “But I can’t–”
“Help it. I understand. And I wouldn’t lie to you, not about this. Kade… he–”
“May be lost forever,” Elwyn finishes for him.
He winces, but gives her a quick nod.
“I know that,” she tells him. “After all we’ve seen of what the Shadow Court can do, I can only run on blind faith at this point that I’ll get him back.”
“Hey, now. It’s not only faith. You’ve got the four of us.” He pauses and frowns. “Well, five if you count the cat, but he’s at most a glorified stomach with wings. But that doesn’t mean that we won’t fight like hell for your brother.”
His thumb sweeps across her cheek, steadying her. She turns her head and presses her lips to his palm, wishing she could express the gratitude she feels that they’ve all stuck beside her this long. Instead, she shifts to take another long look at the world as the night closes in on them.
“I feel like I could see Riverbend from here.”
“If it weren’t for the curve of the world, and if your eyes were as good as mine, you probably could.”
She gives his thigh a light smack.
“My eyes are just fine, thank you.”
“Very fine indeed,” he agrees, that familiar smirk of his firmly in place.
She realizes that she would like to wipe it right off. Sliding her hand down along his arm, she wraps it around his bicep and hauls him down for a kiss.
He’s quick on the uptake, his arms coming around to circle her waist and drag her closer. His tongue runs across her bottom lip, asking for entry; she acquiesces with a tilt of her head and deepens the kiss. The taste of him is a concoction of aged leather, a rain-soaked forest, and a spice she can’t seem to put a name to, something that seems to be uniquely Mal.
His touch dances across her back and up along her ribs, one hand around her waist to keep her steady while the other sinks into her hair. She hooks a leg up and around his hip, drawing him flush against her. Her move is met with a satisfied hum. Pleasure travels through her veins, slow and steady like treacle. It’s dizzying, the effect of him. If he asks, she’ll blame it on the dangerous, sixty-foot drop mere inches away, but they both know a lie when they hear one.
He breaks their kiss to trail his mouth down her neck and across her chest.
“If you wanted to get me all alone so you could have your way with me,” he pauses, his tongue tracing the lines of her collarbone in a way that makes her breath hitch, “you could’ve just said so.”
“I thought our resident rogue and self-proclaimed ‘king of stealth’ would enjoy my attempt at subtlety.”
He laughs, his beard tickling at the sensitive skin of her throat. Some deep, tucked-away part of her would like to hear the sound every day of her life.
“Elwyn, I’ve seen you flirt with every living thing we’ve come across. You wouldn’t know subtle if it was branded across your forehead.”
Dragging her hand down his front, she treats him to a hint of her nails, pleased when he sucks in a breath as she continues lower.
“The way I see it,” she murmurs, “why waste all that precious time and energy when I can be as brazen as I’d like and get there even faster?”
Sliding her touch back up his body, she fits two fingers under his chin and urges him to meet her for another kiss. Her toes curl inside her boots at the heady slide of his lips against hers.
“Would you like to know my next idea?” he asks, nipping a path along her jaw to below her ear.
“Mmm-hmm.”
“Once we can get away from our merry band of misfits for more than two minutes, I plan on taking you to bed.” He bites down at the soft skin below her ear, a breathy chuckle escaping him when she bites her lip on the end of a groan. “Once there, I plan on coaxing out all these lovely noises you’re keeping bottled up.”
Shivers dance up her spine, but in a good way this time.
“What a coincidence.” She grins up at him when he pulls back to return to her mouth. “Because that’s exactly what I plan on doing with you.”
He gazes down at her with something akin to wonder. “Great minds think alike, then.”
At the horizon, the sunlight empties out the last of its parting glass. The dark blue of twilight seeps across the canvas before them. “We should probably get going,” he sighs, the disappointment ringing through his words. “Especially if we want to eat something before Threep hoards it all for himself.”
Elwyn concedes his point and casts a wary glance down the side of the castle.
“Um, how are we going to get back down?”
“Like any normal person would. By the stairs.”
She would wipe the shit-eating grin off his face if she wasn’t worried she’d knock him straight off the turret.
“There are stairs? You told me the only way up was to climb!”
“The only interesting way up. C’mon, El, what’s life without a little adventure, hmm?”
“Don’t call me El.”
“I think it suits you, but all right, fine. How about Wynnie?”
“I will throw you from this castle, I swear.”
“Ah, but you’re laughing. Admit it, you like it.”
“You’re absurd.”
“You know what, you’re right. But it’s a shame you can’t come up with a nickname for me, what with my name being so short.”
“I’m sure I can find something that suits you.”
“Oh, surely you must know by now, Elwyn. It’s you – you suit me right down to the ground.”

AN: Me, ending a story with lines of dialogue instead of giving it a proper send-off? Truly unprecedented.
References: a line from Syfy’s Alice and the Roman goddess Salus that I named the mountains after.
Was I inspired to write this by the fact that Mal Volari is essentially the whatever-century-this-book-exists-in version of Nathan Drake? Yes, thanks. Was there ever any doubt I would love him the moment he opened his smart mouth? Nope!
Honey-wine is actually another name for mead, though there is a chance they could be different drinks depending on the region (thanks wikipedia). No matter what, though, I imagine the drink tastes a lot better in the Blades universe than my only taste of it at a pub in Pitlochry.
